To prevent the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala from looking old, the aging antelope emblem – which hasn’t changed significantly since the car initially debuted in 1958 – has been given a new go-fast look for the full-size sedan’s tenth generation.
Just as the Chevrolet Corvette is recognized for its checkered flag emblem, the African antelope emblem continues to be the Impala’s distinguishing factor and, although it will be given a new look, designers aren’t straying too far from the original design.
“We kept the stylized interpretation of the animal, and made the impala more muscular. We also added defined edges to give the impala a sleek form and make it look like it was running fast,” said Joann Kallio, lead creative designer for Chevrolet global badging in a release.
The badge will be finished in bright chrome, which Chevy says will highlight certain parts of the badge and give the antelope an illusion of movement. Different versions of the emblem will be stamped on each side of the car so that the antelope will always be running forward, and the antelope will also appear on the aluminum sill plates. The emblem has appeared on the Impala and the Impala SS’ sail panel since 1994. Check out the Impala emblem’s evolution in the gallery below.
